During the heyday of the Royal Navy's presence in Portland, this early Edwardian building belonged to the First Admiral and was later used as the headquarters for the MOD police. It benefits from extensive views over Lyme Bay and is a good base to explore the island's heritage, including Portland Castle and Portland Lighthouse. The Round Island Coastal Footpath will give you a good look at the flora and fauna, or visit Chesil beach or nearby Weymouth to enjoy its award-winning beaches. The Isle and Royal Manor of Portland has a diverse history so a visit to Portland Castle and Portland Museum is a must.

You'll find this small hostel that was once the old village school hidden away in the Shropshire hills. Walkers will love it here, with the Shropshire Way passing close by and paths leading you to Long Mynd and Stiperstones. Remember to bring your binoculars as there's plenty of birdlife worth watching.

This former water mill - built around 1600 - provides the perfect antidote to a day spent exploring Scarborough's many attractions such as the Sea Life Centre, Kinderland and Atlantis Water Park. This refurbished Georgian country house nestles in wooded grounds on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, just minutes from the village. There are a variety of routes to choose from, but one of guests' favourites is the Devil's Dyke walk that leads you to an Iron Age fort. In the middle of the Forest of Bowland, there's an excellent network of quiet roads and cycle paths while walking routes will take you across moorland and alongside the river and reservoir. For peace and solitude, head to the relatively undiscovered fells and valleys of the nearby Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hostel is a comfortable retreat to return to - a 17th century village inn, the listed building has recently been refurbished to a high standard.

Birdwatchers will be in their element here, as a wide variety of wildfowl flocks to this area. The world famous WWT Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre is nearby and the hostel has an observation lounge so you can keep an eye on feathered visitors to the duck pond. Walkers will find plenty to do too, with long-distance footpath The Severn Way running past the hostel and the Cotswold Way four miles away. Originally built as a hunting lodge for King John in 1205 on the site of an earlier stronghold, its towers were added in 1293 as part of the Ring of Stone around Wales. Its a unique experience, especially when you enter into the ancient spirit with medieval banquets on Wednesdays and Saturdays in August.

There's plenty of entertainment to be had around St David's, Britain's smallest city. It offers a cathedral, Bishop's Palace, Oceanarium and watersports centre plus Ramsey Island RSPB reserve across the bay. Lord Mountbatten opened this Youth Hostel in 1975, once a large private Victorian house. It is situated in West Wight, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty much of which is owned by the National Trust. You'll find a wealth of wildlife all around whether you choose to walk on the downs or along the impressive chalk cliffs. Search for sealife in rock pools, brave the chairlift to explore Alum Bay, take the obligatory snapshot of the Needles or head inland on foot to escape the summer crowds.

This traditional 16th century cottage hostel comes complete with exposed beams, log-burning stove and its own babbling brook. It is an ideal base for exploring the River Dart and South Hams countryside. The historic town of Totnes, with a Norman castle and medieval guildhall, is a couple of miles away. Dartmoor National Park and the south Devon coastal resorts are all within easy reach.

In the centre of a small, friendly village, this hostel used to be a school and still retains a children's playground. Now refurbished, it's a good base for exploring Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The sea is only 0.5 miles away, as is the coastal path. The fishing village of Abereiddy, famous for its Blue Lagoon and black-sand beaches, is two miles away, or head to St David's for safe swimming and sandcastles galore.
