It is hard to believe that Windsor Castle
started life as a wooden keep built by William the Conqueror, which Henry
II then tore down and rebuilt, to become the castle much as you see it
today.
Windsor Castle has been the official residence
of the Queen and royal residence for nine centuries. When
the Queen is in residence at Windsor Castle, the Royal Standard flag is
flown from the top of the Round Tower. It is one of the largest
and oldest inhabited castles in the world. It covers 13 acres and
its precincts are almost a mile around.
Attractions to see include the State Apartments,
Queen Mary's Doll Houses and exhibition of The Queen's Presents and Carriages.
In 1992 a fire destroyed some of the state
apartments. With no insurance the Royal family found themselves
with a £50 million bill, half of which was footed by the tax payer and
the other half paid by the Queen herself. To raise the money the
Queen began inviting the public into Buckingham Palace during August and
September.
